Do you think a soldier is scared as he prepares for battle? Think “Saving Private Ryan”, the opening scene. Talk about denial, I woulda been puking my guts out. There’s no training for this, even realistic training. Nothing compares to the sinking feeling that comes when faced with the realization that you are about to engage in battle...and you may die.
Now, I've never been in official combat; never been in a war. I have the utmost respect for those who have. But while in the military overseas, I became involved with an EST (Emergency Service Team), that was tasked with training for, staying abreast of and eliminating, if need be, foreign or domestic threats. This was in '83 before terrorism became a household word. Essentially a military SWAT, we were serious about what we did and trained constantly for hijack/hostage situations involving our aircraft, high ranking officers, and various base facilities; even in the jungle.
I provided security at various functions for various factions as part of my regular duty. Early in my tour, after completing a shift one morning, (thinking nothing more than shedding gear, getting a shower and having a cold beer), myself and another EST member were informed of an inbound hijacked plane out of the Philippines. Although it turned out later to be a false alarm, I remember my stomach hitting the floor and immediately thinking, here we go; can we really pull this off? Had we trained enough; had we done all we could to stand, to withstand?
In a hostile situation, killing an opponent is one thing; however, severely wounding them is just as well or better. The goal is to eliminate the enemies overall effectiveness. Wounding can tie up others, especially medics, thus rendering them less effective. It is also demoralizing to teammates, spreading fear and concern; they begin to wonder if they’re next. This is but one tactic soldiers use against their opponent.
As Believers we have an aggressive and active enemy; we are at spiritual war every day. At the least, he’s trying to do to us what I just described above. Eventually, he wants to kill you. And yours. So the question remains and is put to us today - have we done all we could to stand? To withstand? What protects you and those who rely on you, and where does your strength come from?
Romans 10:9-10 states, “That if you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.” (NIV)
If we believe and have faith in God through Jesus Christ, we are justified and made righteous thus. Saved. “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.” Romans 5:1-2, (NIV)
Scripture also tells me that “His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.” 2 Peter 1:3-4, (NIV).
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Ephesians 6:10-12, (NIV)
Soldier on.
